Something Don’d on Me! 6-27-18

When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away your ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.” – Corrie Ten Boom

We are not a very patient people. When the going gets rough…we usually try to find an alternate route, one that is less bumpy and more comfortable. In our microwave society, staying power has become a rare commodity. We want it fixed faster, exchanged quicker, and we are not accustomed to perseverance. We might see our struggle, and offer up a quick prayer…but often, we are immediately trying to fix the situation under our own power. (Ok…that last line was aimed at me…no one else! But if it helps you too…all the more better!) After a few minutes, we want everything that we are dealing with healed/mended/repaired, and “back to the way it was before!”
The problem is…God doesn’t always work that way. God is a God of order, not chaos. He is thorough and precise. And He DOES NOT work according to our clock! When we were at AMP on Sunday, Dennis shared a verse as he begins his work with our teens:

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion!” Philippians 1:6

He was talking about the good works that God has begun in the lives our students through the leaders we have had in the past…and how God will CONTINUE that work through the AMP group we have now. But as I watched and smiled, I realized that God is CONTINUING that work in you and me as well! He takes His time. He wants you to “marinate” the right amount…to “cook” the right amount…so you will be “well seasoned!”
In the book of James, the writer tells the RESULTS of perseverance: maturity and completeness! There is NO WAY to become mature in our walk with Christ, without ENDURING some tough times. We don’t get spiritual completeness by sitting in the comfy new chairs in the auditorium and it soaks through our skin! It is often trial by fire. And that fire burns away impurities. No one has ever become a true FOLLOWER of Christ without perseverance…and no one has ever persevered without pain.
We need more STAYING power! We need to move from “FAN” to “FOLLOWER”…and realize that move might cost us something. It might cost us time…or pain…or ridicule…or prestige. But if we are patient and stay WITH God in the tough times, we will find more JOY in the journey! And we will see a more COMPLETE Christ-follower in the mirror!
Almighty God, I’m so sorry when I try to fix things too quick, and I don’t let YOU be God! I want to be a mature disciple…I want to grow IN YOU! Teach me to STAY IN YOUR WORD and let YOU complete good works in me! In the name of our Servant Savior Jesus, Amen.
