Let Me Be Frank… 1-30-19

Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love, to be made whole and holy by His love. Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure He took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of His lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.
Ephesians 1:4-6

I am a rule follower.  Even if I don’t quite understand the rule or the reason for it I will follow it every single time.
I’ll also be frustrated with others who choose not to follow the rule.  Some manmade rules are set in stone (like traffic laws) and some are just understood (like the drive-thru rule).  Maybe I should expound on that last one…  It is (or should be) understood that when there are two drive-thru lanes you wait your turn to enter the single line.  It’s not ok to just go willy-nilly ahead of someone else just because you are late or have a bigger vehicle.  It’s not fair.  And I’m stepping off my soapbox now.
I believe rules are meant to be followed.  But I also cringe when I see the red, white, and blue lights behind me even when I am obeying the rules of the road.  Always questioning and second-guessing my performance.
I have loved this sermon series because it is challenging me to see God in a different way.  Don talked about the Mosaic law this week and made the statement, “God puts up fences for our benefit.”  There are parameters, boundaries, laws, fences, etc. that God has given us in order to live fruitful and joyful lives!  Sometimes His laws are easy to understand but very difficult to follow.  But we try because we want to attain His affection.  We need the love of God in order to keep going.  So we hold ourselves accountable to an impossible standard and, when we fail, we shame ourselves into thinking we’re not worthy of His love.  But here’s the thing…
God’s love was there before God’s law.
We try and try and try to be good enough and we hate ourselves when we fall short.  We promise we’ll do better next time as the cycle starts again.  But it doesn’t have to be this way…
We have always had His love.  We will always have His love.  There is nothing we can do that will make Him love us more or cause Him to love us less.  God’s love was there before God’s law.  His plan (Jesus Christ) was there before the Law.  Before the foundation of the world, “God so loved.”
Flip the script today.  Stop living like you are trying to attain His love and start living like He loves you with every ounce of His strength – because He does!  If God is for us in every way imaginable, then His laws are for us
