Something Don’d on Me! 1-30-19

“He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:27 (HCSB)

I love treasure maps. I’m not any good at them…but I love the idea. When Billy Crystal and his buddies are trying to find gold in “them thar hills”, I’m cheering them on! When Nicolas Cage wants to steal the Declaration of Independence because there’s a secret code on the back that no one has ever seen…I’m hooked! The thrill of discovering something that was RIGHT THERE ALL ALONG and everyone else missed it-that’s exciting!
But sadly, I too often miss this “Explorer Spirit” in my walk with Christ! Oh sure…I read my Bible. Yeah, I listen to K-Love. And of course, I go to church once in a while. But do I really SEARCH for Him??
The Disciples even did this. They had front-row seats to the majesty of Jesus! They heard the Sermon on the Mount. They gathered up the baskets of leftovers as He fed a huge crowd. And even THEY missed it. In John 14:8, Phillip said, “Show us the Father and that will be enough for us!” And Jesus said “Don’t you see me?? I’ve been here all along, Phil…are you blind??” (Well, maybe he didn’t say it with that much sarcasm…but you get the point!) And as much as I want to blast Phillip…I’ve missed the evidence of God’s Presence on MANY occasions.
Get this: When you notice God, He will reveal His presence more! Yes…that requires effort on OUR part! But the more I LOOK for God…the more I will SEE Him! And I DON’T think it’s a treasure quest…I think it’s in me opening my eyes to the Providence of God, the Patience of God, the beauty of His creation…I think it is right in front of us all along.

Have you marveled at the sunsets lately? Do you smile at the laughter of your children? Yes, we get wind around here…but that wind is spinning turbines out by Dora and Elida, creating energy and jobs! Have you eaten recently? (If you eat more than 1 meal a day, you are richer than 82% of the planet!) Have you been afraid that troops will kick down your door and take your Bibles? (Yes, the political landscape is toxic…but we still are FREE!)
When we quiet our hearts, we will see that God is still there. Breathe. Be Still. Close your eyes. Now open them…and SEARCH for God working in your life. I’m willing to bet, you can see Him quicker than you think. And the treasure you’ll find in that quest, will bless you more than you can imagine!
